Well depending on how good your hearing is - it might be the Filters you have selected.

i.e. this screen in the Audio configuration section of the review:

AudioSettings_083533%20Medium.jpeg

Most FiiO devices now have these filters as configurable so it can be worth experimenting with these to find one that doesn't affect the upper treble region.

I never had a dap before. The m23 has a higher end sound like the fiio ka17 for example ?

jeromeoflaherty
Yes, it has a higher end sound - the DAC and amplifier they put into this are top quality (in this price range). The KA17 is a great device if you plan to use your smartphone - but it will drain the smartphone battery unless you charge it separately. While a DAP is a dedicated device for music - so the whole device from the storage expandability, the hardware buttons, to the applications like the FiiO Music, the different 'modes', the 'Roon Ready' support etc are all designed to provide a wide set of features dedicated around music in a portable standalone device.

New Head-Fier
Pros: Incredible cheap at $24
ANC and Transparency ( normally not available at this price point)
Mobile App for configuration
3 excellent sounding Profiles (Basshead especially is good)
Cons: ANC mode is ok but not great
Microphone was a bit poor
Case is open by design so might gather dust - Moondrop offer a separate case now
Treble is just average at this price point (if it was an IEM - still very good for a TWS)

nice review. I have the Hype2 and ultimately couldn't get along with it for two reasons: 1) it is a little large for my ears, giving discomfort after about an hour, and 2) the midrange was at the same time recessed, but sharp sounding. Not sure if the 17k spike on the graph contributes to that. I think you are correct that if you have an elevated bass, and an energetic upper mid/lower treble, there just isn't any way vocals are going to be able to sound correct. Reducing bass from 200-300Hz as Theiaudio have done just isn't enough to rescue vocals.

For fun I decided to EQ it to my liking, and was able to do that by reducing 2db across the bass region, 1db at 2k and 2db at 4k. Unfortunately my macEQ doesn't have a band for 6k, so the upper midrange/lower treble still is a little bright for my ears.

It sounds quite similar to my Canon2 with switches 1up1down with that eqing, except fo the 6k region. And the Canon2 is a lot smaller in the ear.

1000+ Head-Fier
Pros: Very good tuning, well extended, very pleasant, but controlled and smooth at both ends, with a lusty, melodic, musical, balanced and full midrange.
- Good stage levels, sense of openness, separation and depth.
- Very good unboxing experience.
- Great ergonomics and design.
- Excellent cable with three interchangeable terminations.
Cons: The reproduction of pure, very low-frequency tones is not realistic and there is room for improvement, coming from a dynamic driver.
- This is not an analytical set, the micro detail is not the best.
- It can be a very relaxed sound for those looking for more emphasis on bass or treble.
